CALD Webinar Series: Empowering LTELs with SEL, Language, and Literacy


Margarita Calderón and Hector Montenegro discuss their new book Empowering Long-Term English Learners with Social Emotional Learning, Language, and Literacy. This book addresses academic vocabulary and discourse, depth of reading comprehension, and content writing nested in social emotional learning strategies. Drs. Calderón and Montenegro will share key ideas from the book as well as tips and tools educators can use in the classroom.

Margarita Calderon


Margarita Calderón, PhD, is professor emerita and senior research scientist at the Johns Hopkins University School of Education. She has conducted research, training, and curriculum development for teaching language, reading comprehension, and content knowledge to K-12 English learners. Her work has focused on effective instructional processes, two-way and dual-language programs, teacher learning communities, and professional development for schools with language minority populations and striving adolescent readers. Dr. Calderón's research has been supported by the New York Carnegie Corporation Foundation, US Department of Education, US Department of Labor, National Institutes of Health, and the Texas Education Agency.

Hector Montenegro


Hector Montenegro is an internationally recognized keynote and motivational speaker, appearing at conferences, conventions, universities, schools and special events in countries around the world, including Russia, Japan, China, Germany, Mexico, and others. (Dominican Republic, Panama, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, Brazil, in Chile and Peru) he is a special consultant with the US Embassies on education reform. Most recently he has served as a volunteer for the Fruit Tree Planting Foundation in Brazil, El Salvador and Uganda. An expert on instructional designs, Hector specialized in standards development, curriculum alignment, interactive pedagogy, technology integration and effective instructional strategies for English language learners. He works directly with administrators, faculty and staff in developing leadership skills to establish structures that promote student success and support collaborative cultures that empower faculty and staff.
